I’m putting my feet up and taking it a bit easy this week, after my marathon of NYC and Road Trip Tip posts. But I did want to share a two articles I recently published elsewhere – just in case you need your MOAT fix.
If you’ve never checked out A Traveler’s Library you’re in for a treat; it’s like browsing a really fun and cozy bookstore without leaving the comfort of your desk. The site offers reviews and essays about books and movies related to all aspects of travel and it’s a paradise for both the armchair and intrepid traveler alike. So of course when travel writer and bonne vivante Vera Marie Badertscher (Twitter handle: @pen4hire) asked me if I would write about a book that I used to prepare my children for one of our trips, I jumped at the chance. You can see my essay about the book Linnea in Monet’s Garden there. And if you’re interested in reading more about our experience at Giverny, please see my post about our trip to Monet’s house.
And if you haven’t seen it yet, I’ve also got an essay about the year I spent in Florence with my mother when I was nine at Italiakids.com. The site is a fantastic resource for anyone going to Italy with their children for either the short or long term. I’m grateful to Shannon Venable for suggesting the topic; it’s definitely led me to consider the possibilities of writing more about my experiences in Italy.
And in case you’re interested in what makes me tick (or at least what some of the thoughts are behind this blog), please see my interview at Wandering Educators. While you’re there, browse the eclectic articles, book reviews, and travel tips from educators around the world.
Happy reading! And because I never can resist a sharing a sneak peek of what’s coming up I’ll tell you that this weekend we’ll be checking out Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and its environs including the National Canal Museum in Easton.
What a nice thing for you to say about A Traveler’s Library. Maybe I should hire you to write copy for the blog. Wait a minute…you just DID write copy for the blog–and believe me I appreciated it greatly, as did my readers. Thanks so much for sharing your travels, your books and your family.
OOOOOh, Bethlehem! Hillary Kwiatek, “Hillary” on MotherTalkers lives in Bethlehem. She’s running for County Commissioner, so you may even see her signs on lawns while you’re there!
I just read your Italy story and enjoyed it quite a bit! What an experience to have had at such a young age. We’re not planning on an extended stay, but I am in the early stages of organizing a large family trip to Italy in summer of 2012 to go to the town my grandmother’s family was from. My 8 year old daughter is thrilled and so into the travel planning with me! It’s great to have children who have that travel bug just like I do!
Also, I appreciate the recommendation for the Traveler’s Library – looks like a great site to follow!
Rachel, I am a supporter of Hilary and will be having dinner at her house on Friday (she’s also promised a tour of Bethlehem).
Shelley – that sounds like a wonderful trip. I love that you are involving your daughter in the planning. I’m sure it will make the whole adventure so much more meaningful for her.
