Mondays are for dreaming: Kinsarvik, Norway

By Mara 10 Comments

This week I’m dreaming about taking the kids to Kinsarvik, Norway, from which Matt’s family emigrated to the United States and where he still has relatives living. I’d like to show the boys the place of their ancestry, to hike up into the mountains and see the waterfalls, to look out over the fjord. In my dream, we’d go at midsummer and camp out, marveling at the fact that the sun doesn’t set. And I know that they would love the nearby amusement park. Maybe we could also stay in the local hotel where furniture that was designed by their great uncle still is in use.

So anyone who has been there, feel free to chime in with suggestions or thoughts. And I’d love to hear from you about a place you would like to visit with your kids – for the first or the hundredth time. I’m planning to run this feature each Monday, so if you want to share just one now and save your other locales for future comments, feel free!

We are in Norway right now! It is the most expensive place in Europe, so dream lots of money to take with you! lol! Even camping, the prices are mindblowing!

The fjords are fabulous & think September too or at least after Aug 15th, because all of Scandinavia will be out at midsummer…unless your fantasy enjoys crowds.

Maybe you can look up some relatives! We ran into an American family here who did just that.

Sounds like a great dream. It is a beautiful country!

Boy I shudder when I think about the most expensive country in Europe! That’s saying something, especially right now. I hope that you are having a wonderful time and I look forward to reading about your travels there.

Have you read Heidi’s Alp by Christine Hardyment? You’d love it. I think they went to Norway or maybe it was Denmark. A good read in any case. I just tuned in to your blog and am enjoying it immensely. My kids are 14 now so I am envious of your time with Teddy one-on-one.

Thanks Andrea. I have not read that book, and will have to check it out (I’m thinking I need to start a thread about travel-related books on the blog to get me reading).

One nice thing about writing this is that it definitely is getting me to go out and do more things with Teddy. For months all I did was take him to the grocery store. This is better for both of us. I know that when he is 14 I’ll be very happy we went to the zoo instead of the produce aisle.

The WanderDad and I are both Irish, but we live in Seattle. Our kids have been to Ireland many, many times. (Check this out for some photos from a recent trip: http://wanderlustandlipstick.com/blogs/wandermom/2008/08/24/ireland-leprechauns-and-rainbows/).
So, my ‘Monday Dreams’ are not about returning to the place of my ancestors, but about going to all the places I haven’t been. We’re currently planning a RTW trip. I think you’ve just given me an excuse to write about interesting places we plan to visit as I research them. Thanks!
