If you’re like me, when you think beach vacation, you think donuts. Am I right?
Well, OK, maybe I’m the only one, but good donuts definitely equals happiness and happiness is what I want when I’m relaxing, and so I can therefore conclude that donuts + beach trip = very happy Mara. And I’m happy to report that Duck Donuts certainly helps deliver on their end of the equation if you happen to be vacationing in the Currituck Outer Banks. Here’s how:
You walk in and order your donuts, choosing from the array of icings and toppings.
Then, while you watch, the donuts here are made right in front of you by this ingenious doo-hickey.
Then the staff ices and glazes and cinnamon sugars to order.
And voila: You are handed a box of warm deliciousness, which you can either tear into immediately or take home to enjoy in your lovely beach house.
Here is what I liked about these donuts: The texture is perfect – pillowy enough to sleep on. And, perhaps most importantly of all, their sweetness comes almost entirely from the toppings, which are applied generously.
You’ll find Duck Donuts in four Outer Banks locations – we visited the one on the main drag in Corolla, about two minutes from the house we rented. I’m thinking that were we to spend an entire week there we might have had to make a donut stop every day. Maybe on the way to the beach. You know, to fortify us for all that sand-castle building.
I do have a suggestion: Check the donuts in your box before you leave the shop. When we got back to our beach house we found that four of the six were not what we ordered. But frankly, they were so delicious, that it didn’t matter one bit.
(I say that it didn’t matter because I got the one I chose, which had maple icing and shredded coconut on it. Oh. Yeah.)
There’s more yumminess to be found at Wanderfood Wednesday, so be sure to stroll on over there and check it out. To learn more about our trip to Corolla, see my other posts about the Outer Banks.
I've taken with my children and those I want to take. Explore and you'll find family travel tips, information about vacation destinations, and lots of stories about our adventures!

Maple icing AND shredded coconut?? That is crazy goodness, right there. Love it.:-)

Oh YUM! Those look delicious – I’m really fussy about doughnuts and it’s hard to find great ones but these look perfect
I havnen’t had a doughnut in about…oh…30 years. So I’m glad you can keep me in touch with doughnut vacations.
Peanut butter glaze!! Brilliant!
I was going to suggest Duck Donuts but I didn’t know they had a Corolla location (or any others but the Duck location). Glad you liked it
Now it makes me want a Donut. We may be back in Duck in November and I think that will definitely have to be on my list!!
I’ve never heard of a donut place that like you make your own combinations. Yummy!
