The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Mondays are for dreaming: A return from the dark side

It’s not often on this blog that I reveal the less attractive side of my personality to the world. Mostly that’s because I’m in charge of the content, and hey, I like to look good as much as the next person. But I think it’s also due to the fact that travel truly brings out [...]

MidAtlantic Wednesdays: The Petersen Urban Wildlife Refuge

It’s understandable: it is small and not everyone realizes its significance – or even statehood for that matter (I’ve had people ask me if Delaware is a town in New Jersey). Things have improved a bit now that [...]

Mondays are for dreaming: The gray whale migration

There are lots of things I love about writing a travel blog. I love how it brings a sense of possibility into the most dreary of days. When I’m feeling homebound or tied down all I have to do is poke around my own site for a few moments to remember all the places I’ve [...]

Trafalgar Square, Fall

A glorious October day by the fountain in Trafalgar Square. Of course, here’s what we really want to do: And this: All this before sitting down for a snack of raisins in front of Nelson’s Column: And then riding the double decker bus home: Looking at these photos I realize how long it’s been since [...]

MidAtlantic Wednesdays: Skiing at Bear Creek Mountain

Since I got the entire family excited about skiing at Mad River last month, I decided that I should start exploring some of the ski areas in eastern Pennsylvania. My hope is to find a place where next year we could maybe buy a season’s pass or discount card so that we can spend some [...]
