This Monday I’m dreaming of something completely different than anything I’ve ever dreamed of before. It’s a dream of flying on a chartered JetBlue plane from New York to the Bahamas and staying at the Atlantis Resort to relax on the beach while Teddy amuses himself in the LEGO room of a brand new (and enormous) kids club.
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you might be saying to yourself, “I can’t remember Mara ever mentioning a burning desire to go to the Caribbean. In fact, she hardly ever mentions the beach. And she and her family certainly never stay at resorts.” All of those things are certainly true. Generally when we travel we opt for independence over group tours, head for the mountains not the sea, and stay in apartments or independent hotels.
But some other things are true too. One is that I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth – and the offer for this all-expenses-paid trip is a generous one indeed. Also, how am I to know whether I like going where it’s warm in winter time if I never try it?
And mostly there’s the fact that Teddy has been saying for months that he wants to be a scuba diver when he grows up. Where he got this idea, I don’t know, but almost all of his Christmas gift requests had an under-the-sea theme. When I saw that this trip would offer us the chance to ride on a plane with a giant scuba diver constructed entirely out of Legos, participate in Beach Olympics with other children, swim with dolphins and manta rays, and look at all kinds of aquatic life in the resort’s marine animal habitat, well, I decided that it might be just the thing after all.
So it’s off to Atlantis for Teddy and me next weekend. I will of course be writing about it and sharing my honest opinions. And yes, it’s going to take Tommy a while to get over it. I may have to plan another spectacular trip soon to compensate him.
All of my expenses for this trip will be paid for by LEGO, JetBlue, and the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Got something to say?

Mara – your Caribbean vacation sounds amazing… do not underestimate the restorative powers of a few days of blue sky, blue sea and tropical fruit. Great for your son… great for the accompanying grown-up! Have a lovely stay.
I’m not linking today as my newest post is not really a dream… it’s a tour of our apartment in Bangkok.

Lucky you, my parents are in St Lucia escaping the grey English weather. I hope I don’t have to wait until I retire to enjoy some winter sun

Looking forward to the pictures Mara — and have a great time!
Color me green with envy! I agree with Monna…there is something to be said about a few days spent listening to the ocean in warmer weather in the middle of winter! We headed to the Bahamas in December one year and it was so exciting to shed the extra weight of the jackets, scarves, and hats!

I am green too. Have a wonderful time and I can’t wait to hear about it. Our winter travel budget is tight right now and the Bahamas looks like one of our potential options.
