The teeniest pumpkin

11.06.09_Winterthur

One the more magical places to visit at any time of the year is the garden at Winterthur in Wilmington, Delaware. I thought I’d share a few pictures of a new attraction in the Enchanted Garden.

This may look to the casual observer like a stripped tree trunk, perhaps a piece of garden sculpture, but step a little closer and you’ll find magic in the nooks and crannies. Open one door, and you’ll see yourself staring back.

Or peer in a window to see a cozy fairy den, all laid out for some tea on a chilly autumn afternoon. The little striped pumpkin is the perfect finishing touch, don’t you think?

I love outdoor spaces like that – especially at this time of the year when it’s cold and wet and we’re all more likely to take the easy choice and stay inside.

One of my favorite wedding gifts was an ornament from Winterthur. I’ve never been there, but it is on my list!

I’ve seen a lot of these “fairy doors” around lately! A couple of cities here have them scattered throughout their downtown areas. I looks like a fun treasure hunt for kids (and kids at heart!)

Truly a gift to find outdoor places like this to explore and experience the seasons. Now all I need to do is get Delaware’s people to talk to California’s people, and maybe we can get a replication going on over here in the Bay Area!

I love Winterthur, especially during Christmas. My family and I normally make the trip every year, in addition to Longwood Gardens. Thankfully northern Delaware and the Philadelphia area offer a wide range of holiday options for families…

Also, don’t forget the Brandywine River Museum, which can also be a lot of fun for kids too.

Got something to say?
