The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Road trip tip: Eating on the road

Before I had kids I really didn’t think that much about what I’d eat when I had a long drive. Either we’d grab a slice of pizza at a rest stop or just wait until we got to our final destination. Excuse me for a minute. OK, I’ve wiped my eyes at the thought of [...]

Goodbye summer…but before you go, a few road trip tips

Happy first day of fall everyone in the Northern Hemisphere. If you’re like me, this is a time of year when you’re energized and planning new beginnings including (hopefully) some fun family trips. But even as I watch the leaves pile up in my yard, I also like to spend some time reflecting on summer, [...]
