The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Mondays are for dreaming: The Empire State Building

Full disclosure: If I were to truly write about my dream tonight it would have to do not with adventures or scenery or roaming with my children. After logging 3700 miles and six weeks of travel this summer I returned to a house in desperate need of some sprucing up. And since we always stay [...]

Summer treasures: 111 and counting

So we’re going home to Delaware tomorrow, after three weeks in Vermont. The car will be loaded with all of our gear and bicylces plus a gallon of maple syrup and loads of new books purchased for a quarter apiece at the library sale at the Waitsfield Farmers Market. We’ll also be virtually weighed down [...]

Mondays are for dreaming: A country fair

Ever since Tommy saw the Summer 2009 issue of Vermont Life, which contained a photographic essay about summer fairs, he’s wanted to go to one. It may well have been the cover photo of the magazine that seized his imagination, showing as it did a Ferris wheel lit up and spinning, its cars nothing but [...]

Miniature golf with a view – Vermont style

Tommy loves to pick up those tourist maps that have cute sayings and pictures of the businesses that advertise drawn on them. Since these will occupy him for some time in the car, I always let him grab them when we’re traveling. This can have interesting consequences, especially when he discovers that a few miles [...]
