Thanks for your comment Megan - I think it's well taken. I've also rented apartments from owners in Paris and Florence and done quite well.

We just returned from a month in Italy and France with our two small kids, ages four years and 16 months. In Italy, a great bargain option can be an Agritourismo, essentially a farm who has space to rent as well. We stayed at one that is very family friendly, even had a trampoline, swings, fun pets like turtles as well as a pool. We had a kitchen are and a fold-out couch to accomidate the kids as well as a crib. It was not luxury, but as mentioned in your post we did not spend all our time there, we spent most of our time exploring! We looked at Ciao Bambino though and loved the properties, if it had been in our range of affordability we would definitely have used that service! We also has a two bedroom apartment in Rome and one in Paris both of which we rented from the owners. They we overall good experiences, although we did have an issue with no hot water in Rome and no way to get it fixed in a timely manner- luckily we were only at that apartment for three days!

This looks like a good destination for families to enjoy and explore together, if a little pricey. Good tips for budget minded people. Nice post.
