My children aren’t the only ones who ride carousels

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know my children have never met a carousel that they didn’t like. This is equally true in Paris and in Gilbert, Arizona, where they enjoyed several rides at the Freestone Railroad Park.

It was a beautiful Saturday evening and the lovely park was full of families playing and riding the small-gauge railroad that snakes through the grounds. But most enchanting of all were the numerous groups gathered for quinceañera* photographs. The dresses and dos were as elaborate as those of any wedding party. One young woman wore a turquoise gown, while all her attendants shimmered in coral. Butterflies sparkled in their hair. The princess photographed above had a full contingent of young men in  military dress clothes posing for photos with her. Teddy was so enchanted with this scene, that he patiently waited for his turn to ride while the pictures were taken.

What a lovely idea, I wish we still had coming of age ceremonies in our culture. Somehow I don’t think getting your first mobile phone counts!

We should all have a bit of kid in us and enjoy a carousel now and then. I love that this woman is so made up and ready for adulthood.

They’re not the only ones who ride carousels either! My friend and I rode the one in Central Park when I was in New York last year.

Cool setting for a photo shoot! Would be fun to see if Vogue picks this up and we’ll see a Carosel theme for the next runway fashions!

Still trying to figure out if I should spring for a quincenara for my daughter who is half Latina. Think helping to pay for college would be better, but I would love to do the mass part and something inexpensive afterward. These pictures are beautiful and Destiny would love dressing up like a princess and having handsome boys all around her. At five she is quite the flirt!!!

Hahaha, I always take advantage when my son goes on a carousel to join him. And he’s 5! So, I can see why this couple of was enjoying it too!

15 seems so young to be ‘coming of age’ but what a lovely chance to dress up and have fun

I can’t think of a better place for a princess to perch for her photos! The detail of the dress and the detail of the carousel complement each other prefectly!

Lovely post, Mara. It brought back a flood of memories of the Monterrey, Mexico girls with whom we used to work. The quinceañera is a time-honoured tradition in Mexico. The parties can also be as elaborate (and as expensive) as weddings.
