The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Not because it’s trendy but because I realize that anything I can do to show families [...]

Mondays are for dreaming: Fenway Park

I’ll admit right away that I know very little about baseball and am not a devotee of the game. But my oldest child is passionate about playing it and with his first year in Little League, I’ve discovered the myriad pleasures of wiling away a warm evening on the bleachers. My experience with going to [...]

Getting ready to hit the road

If you’re like me, this time of year is nothing short of insanity, with what seem like month’s worth of activities crammed into a few short weeks. Now that my kids are school-aged and participate in sports, things get especially crazy. I certainly didn’t intend to go an entire week without posting, but life got [...]

My children aren’t the only ones who ride carousels

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know my children have never met a carousel that they didn’t like. This is equally true in Paris and in Gilbert, Arizona, where they enjoyed several rides at the Freestone Railroad Park. It was a beautiful Saturday evening and the lovely park was full of families [...]
