The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Trip planning: Desert Botanical Garden

I’ve written before that I’m a big fan of taking the kids to botanical gardens. I really like to do this when we visit ecosystems that are vastly different from where we live because it gives them the chance to explore the contrast in very specific ways. Plus it’s relaxing and fun for the adults. [...]

After lots of traveling with infants, toddlers, and now school-age kids, I’ve come to realize that there really aren’t that many things you need to have a successful trip. Not that we travel in a way that I would call [...]

Mondays are for dreaming: Pacific Grove

Many moons ago, in our pre-child days, Matt and I drove up Route 1 from Los Angeles through Big Sur. We spent a few nights at the end of our drive in Pacific Grove, a little less touristy than its flashier neighbors Monterey and Pebble Beach but an excellent spot for doing all the things [...]

Mondays are for dreaming: Zilker Park

As I’ve written before, Austin, Texas holds a very special place in my heart. We spent three lovely months there in 2004 and I would go back for a vacation (or a longer stay) in a heartbeat. I’ve been thinking a lot about Austin this weekend because several of my travel blogging friends including Pam [...]

Is that a giant grasshopper?

Why yes it is – and for some reason, it’s holding a large lady bug. (And no, it was not possible to get my 3-year-old to look at me or the camera while I took this picture, thank you very much). I am a huge fan of acting like a tourist in my own backyard. [...]
