The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

The first time was with my mother. I was nine and it was the [...]

Guest post: Obama inauguration Part 3

As a final entry in his series about the Obama inauguration, I asked the Father of All Trips to reflect on what it meant to him as a citizen, a parent, and especially as a traveling dad. He titled this entry “This is Hope.” I am worried about a lot of things these days. Given [...]

Guest post: Obama inauguration Part 2

This post is the second written by the Father of All Trips, Matt. I asked him to keep his eagle eye on people who attended the inauguration with their children, partly because I was in awe of anyone who had the courage and the wherewithal to do so. These are his observations and photos. Taking [...]
