The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Passports with Purpose: Giving thanks, giving back

I’ve already sledded for an hour and will be devouring a stack of pancakes shortly before venturing back out in the snow again. The family is here, the children are rosy cheeked, and I’m generally feeling grateful for the grace and generosity of the universe that lets me come to Vermont with the people who [...]

Dispatches from the road: Not so fast!

OK, so perhaps I spoke to soon about the beneficence of the travel gods. The Packers got their clocks cleaned and things did not perhaps go quite as I had planned on Monday night. Allow me to elaborate: We were staying in a suite with the kids out on a fold-out couch and Matt and [...]

Dispatches from the road: A surprising day on the NJ Turnpike

I long ago lost track of how many times I’ve driven up and down the entire length of the New Jersey Turnpike from the Del Mem Br (as the signs in Delaware read) to the George Washington Bridge. It is pretty much always an occasion for dread, but never more so than when we have [...]

Mondays are for dreaming: Mad River Glen

I’m going to start this post right away acknowledging that it may seem like I’m cheating a little. Mad River Glen is a ski area in Waitsfield, Vermont where I will be in two days. In fact, it’s a ten-minute drive from the Millbrook Inn (owned by my parents) where I will be staying for [...]

Strolling on the Common Road

The Common Road in Waitsfield, Vermont has become an integral part of our family’s traditions. As this picture shows, we have spent many summer evenings strolling it’s packed surface, admiring the speckled brown and white chickens in the barnyard of the Von Trapp family farm and then circling the Skinner Barn, our ears pricked for [...]
