The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Today I’m dreaming of Florence, Italy, a place I’ve been twice. It was the fifth stop during our year of travel with Tommy (Matt’s sister Becky joined us there). And it was the first place I visited outside of the United States when I was nine years old. In fact, I spent my fourth-grade year [...]

Spooky happenings at MOAT this week…

Wednesday will be a busy day: I’m hosting the Carnival of Cities with links to other blogs, each focusing on a single aspect of a given city. I will also be participating in the Blogapalooza at Just [...]

Out and about with kids: Please Touch Museum

Grandma and Grandpa are here from Arizona this week and I was very excited to take them along with Teddy and me as we visited the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. After years in much smaller digs, the museum has recently reopened in Memorial Hall, a grand building in Fairmount Park that was constructed for [...]
