Big dino, little dino

Little Dino and his cousin Lindsay are in front of the famous T-rex named Sue that stands in the iconic atrium of the Field Museum in Chicago. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned Teddy’s passion for dinosaurs here previously, but it is second only to his passion for little chicks. He was so excited to see Sue and we spent quite a bit of time just looking up at her and talking about how big she is.

This picture was taken on a day trip to Chicago last December (we were visiting Matt’s family in southern Wisconsin). We hadn’t expected the kids to last long at this museum, which really isn’t designed for the youngest among us, but they both loved it and it ended up being our outing for the entire day – we even had lunch there. It was one of those examples of what I love about traveling with children: when they utterly surprise you with their eagerness and interest in the place you have gone. Who knew that my five-year-old would spend over an hour in an exhibit about the earth’s origins and evolution looking at the microbial stew and asking questions about mass extinction and the woolly mammoth? Or that he would be entranced by a room full of totem poles?

Another surprise was that Teddy did get a little nervous when we got into the hall of dinosaurs where there are multiple large skeletons. Sue alone he could handle, but when faced with life-sized versions of all his favorites, he turned on his heel and ran out the door. He did enjoy going into the pyramid, which I found infinitely more creepy, but then I’m taller than he is.

This post is for Photo Friday at Delicious Baby. It is in honor of Debbie and her children who have recently braved bad weather in Chicago in search of a fun family vacation. Please visit and see the pictures my fellow wanderers have shared.

  1. We saw Sue a couple of years ago. Fascinating place. My favorite part of visiting science centers is when they have a good rock/crystal exhibit, although I think we spent more time that visit looking at the special King Tut exhibit.

  2. I still feel guilty for taking mine to the zoo and having her freak out when the chimps started fighting, slamming up against the plate glass where we were sitting. Between that, and her terror of anyone in an animal costume (especially the Easter Bunny) I am thinking we’re a few years away from “educational” travel and Disney World. The therapy will cost me more than the vacation!

  3. Chicago is already on my list of need-to-visit places. You guys are making me want to go there NOW!

  4. Thanks for your post this week. We had a nice time at the field museum too. The native american exhibits (especially the Pawnee Earth Lodge) was a hi-light for us too.

I’m laughing out loud at your comment (in a nice way) we’ve never had the bad timing you mention at the zoo, but my kids were traumatized by the two rides we took them on at Disneyland last weekend. …best laid plans…
