The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

Out and about with kids: Havre de Grace

Today I’d like to introduce a new themed thread to my blog: day trips with Teddy. Making these trips is a conscious and new decision for me. For the past several years I’ve tended to use Friday mornings for much more prosaic purposes, primarily going to the grocery store. Teddy was usually a good sport [...]

The journey to first grade

Tommy started first grade on Monday, at the same school where he attended all-day kindergarten last year. The whole enterprise felt much more blasé than his first day of kindergarten – he didn’t need new uniforms, he knew he was going to class with five of his friends, and just as they did every nice [...]

A tale of two Vermonts

I had the good fortune this summer to do my food shopping at two of the more phenomenal organic markets to be found anywhere outside of California. The Place Monge market in Paris and the Waitsfield Farmers Market. I’ve already talked about Paris, but the Waitsfield market gives that market a run for its money. [...]

The old swimmin’ hole

It doesn’t get much more Americana than this: When we go to Vermont, we actually take our dips at a place we call the swimming hole. Known as Lareau’s for the farmer who used to own the land, this deep bend in the river is a place where Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn might have [...]

A return to Giverny

Tommy has recently developed a fascination with my cookbooks. He loves to read them and look at the pictures, generally asking me all the while if we can make all of the desserts. One of his favorites is really more of a coffee table book, Monet’s Table by Claire Joyes. It includes many lovely photos [...]
