The Mother of All Trips started in June 2008, as my family was preparing to go on a two-week trip to Paris. Really though, it started five years earlier, when my husband Matt and I spent 13 months traveling with our then one-year-old son Tommy. I wrote a book about that experience, and you'll also find that lots of the stories from that time turn up here. Throw in my many dreams of places I'd like to visit, the day trips we often take, and a host of posts about the best places to eat ice cream and you'll find there's a lot to read.

I actually had factored in a bit of heavy traffic on the New Jersey turnpike and still expected to arrive in Newark [...]

One more post…

Just a quick thought before we leave: How did the early pioneers make it across the continent (or the ocean) with their children but no plastic bags?

Armed and ready

Well, the seven-page detailed itinterary is printed. I have made six dinner reservations in French. My garden is watered, the laundry is done (thank you Matt). Amazon has delivered books with walking tours both grown up and more kid-oriented as well as a Quaint Corners of Paris. Most importantly, thanks to the excellent suggestion of [...]
